Progression and Competitive Systems
I inherited the Competitive Systems that has been left static since its inception in Season 2. Without little support and supervision, I drove creating engaging metasystems for Apex Legend's most popular game mode.
Led a phenomenal team of data scientists and analysts to validate our hypothesis and tackle fairness. We correlated game fairness to enjoyment, confirmed a skill model for the Battle Royale, and pitched a new matchmaking algorithm. Collaborating with engineering partners, we built and launched the matchmaking system alongside a corresponding competitive system, resulting in clear increases in match intensity with a minimum impact on wait time.
Hypothesis: Fair and hard earned matches are more fun.
Research: Player churns less when they do not consistent win or loss.
Research: Ranking (Progression) is not a good indicator of Player skill, which has strong correlation to encounter win rate.
Solution: Incorporate Player Skill into matchmaking algorithm; Instead of a discrete ranking based approach, dynamically adjust match fairness approach based on incoming player population to optimize for matchmaking time.
Hypothesis: Creating a chaotic end game akin to professional play creates the memorable and fun experience
Considerations: Scoring for Placement & Kills is inherently cursed; they represent the motivations of a Battle Royale - Be the last team standing. Kills encourages interactions and proper pacing, but can not mutually coexist with placement because seeking interactions is inherently risky.
Solution: Implemented Placement driven scoring with a bonus system that adjusts a player's ranking toward their estimated player skill. Read more here. These changes resulted in clear sustained increase in player engagement and retention during early season play.
Eventually, Ranked team eventually merged into the new Player Progression team. Ranked gameplay, new player onboarding, and long-term retention of players is the core focus of the Player Progression team.
We are currently working on solutions that addressing these topics.
